Overview
District MIS staff can customize the parent portal registration process. There are two main options with parent account registration when it comes to the parent getting access to student data:
- Manual Verification - Parent accounts can be verified manually by school or district staff using the Verify Parent Accounts screen.
- Automatic Verification - During the parent registration, the parent enters certain student fields in Focus that, if matched up to the values on the student, will automatically verify their account when it is created. Manual verification can still be required for students who have custody alerts if MIS configures this.
The purpose of this article is to explain how the parent verification process works for both scenarios.
Parent View
Below is what the parent will see on their portal until the school/district has verified their account.
Verify Parent Accounts
To verify parent accounts, school staff will go to Users > Verify Parent Accounts. There are 3 options on the top right of the screen:
- Search All Schools - select this check box to search for unverified parent account registered at all the schools to which you have access.
- Show Verified Parents - select this check box to review parent accounts that have already been verified.
- Show All Parents - select this check box to view all parent accounts, those that have been verified and those that have not been verified. Checking this box will also display parent accounts you manually linked to students which are not yet enabled.
Unverified parent accounts reflect parents who have gone to the Focus Parent Portal and have requested a user account in order to be able to view their student's information, but have not yet been enabled by staff.
To review account information, click the Student name to view Students > Student Info. Click the Parent name to open Users > User Info.
To verify an account, select the check box next to the account. This check box is only active for accounts that have not been verified. Select the check box in the column header to select all accounts at once. Once selections have been made, click Save.
To deny an account request or remove an account verification, click the delete button (black minus sign). Denying a parent's request does not delete the parent portal account that has been created. The parent will not be granted access to the student's information and will continue to see the alert prompting them to visit the student's school prior to gaining access to the student's information.
