Overview
If an ABE student’s post-test indicated their functioning level is now Level 5 or 6 on a particular test part; the student will move from that ABE course to the GED or ASB course depending on their educational goals.
When progressing students from courses in one program to courses in another program, you will have to drop courses by adding a Dropped date on the course and add new courses to schedule.
This article covers how to enter this information in Scheduling > Student Schedule in Focus for various scenarios to progress students.
Progressing Students
Anytime you are progressing students from courses in one program to courses in another program, you must remember that you need to preserve the history of the Daily Hours the student was assigned previously. You should never add or remove hours from an existing schedule record. If you add more hours to a previous schedule record, it will make it appear as though that student’s schedule has had that many hours in the for the entire duration since the enroll date.
Below we outline a couple of scenarios to illustrate how to make these schedule changes. For our example, we will progress the student from ABE to GED.
Progressing from one ABE Course to one GED Course
Scenario: Student pretests at Adult Functioning Level 4 in TABE Reading and Math, and is enrolled in both ABE RLA and ABE Math for 1.4 daily hours each.
After a couple of weeks, the student is doing well in class and TABE tests again. The student again scores at Math Level 4, but are now at a Reading Level 5. This counts as a post test gain for ABE RLA as well as the Pre-Test for GED Prep Comp and the student may move to GED Prep Comp for Reading, but still remains in ABE Math for preparation for a valid post test that qualifies entry into the GED Prep course for Math. Notice that the hours match between the old ABE RLA class and new GED Prep Comp class. The ABE Math class remains on the schedule as is.
Progressing from ABE + GED to only GED
Same Student in Scenario:
A couple more weeks have gone by and the student is doing great! The student tests again in TABE math and scores a EFL of 5. You now enter the Dropped date on BOTH the original GED Prep and the ABE Math course and re-enroll the student into GED Prep ONLY for 2.8 Daily Hours.
The reason you don't just drop the ABE Math and change the GED Prep Daily Hours is because you must preserve the history of the student's 1.4 hours in the GED Prep class up until the point they are only enrolled in GED Prep. If you had simply changed the hours on GED prep, it would falsely report as the student attending 1.4 hours of ABE Math AND 2.8 hours of GED Prep Comp September 3rd-19th.
